If you don't understand why a VIN sticker is needed at all, we will try to briefly explain what it's all about!
The fact is that due to the sharp increase in the number of cars among the population in the mid-20th century, there was an urgent need to develop a more convenient system for identifying motor vehicles.
However, for a long time, due to the lack of a unified standard for VIN numbers, manufacturers often experimented with various formats, thereby complicating their aggregation into a single system.
This inconsistency came to an end in 1981, when the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the USA approved a unified format for all identification numbers consisting of 17 characters made up of Latin letters and Arabic numerals. Today, this format is used worldwide, including even the notably independent Australia.
Today, every vehicle comes off the assembly line already bearing an assigned VIN number. This can appear either as a plate with the vehicle body number, or as a VIN sticker on the door pillar — which, by the way, have proven very effective as anti-theft VIN stickers.
Therefore, if during an inspection of your vehicle by the relevant authorities, it turns out that, for example, your VIN sticker on the door pillar is missing, you risk being detained for verification of the vehicle's ownership.
